Case Study: Customizable Swimwear Website

For my senior project at Cal Poly, I designed a responsive website for an e-commerce brand offering swimwear with customizable styles and sizing. As the UX Designer for this project, I completed market and user research to gather data and design an optimized website with effective customization modules. The main tools I used were Adobe XD, Illustrator, and InDesign

The Problem

The women’s swimwear industry is primarily made up of fast fashion brands and to keep up with rapid production rates, brands heavily rely on low-quality construction and a generic sizing scale to meet quotas. However, generic sizing leaves out a large market of women with disproportionate bust, waist, and hip measurements. Additionally, this business model is incredibly unsustainable and damaging to the environment.

Overview

I researched the swimwear market to create a brand and website that offers fully customizable sizing and semi-customizable styles. I catered to women looking to invest in sustainability and quality.

Research

In 2015, more than $62 billion worth of clothing and footwear styles were returned due to poor fit and/or incorrect sizing.

64% of consumers state the main reason for returning clothing is incorrect fit.

73% of Gen Zers are willing to pay more for ethically sourced products.

66% of Gen Zers are willing to pay more for sustainable or environmentally friendly products.

62% of consumers surveyed responded that they could not find clothing that fit well at retail at all.
